The average American Indian reservation family has less affordable access to healthy, well prepared bison meat than the average non-Indian due to current inspection, distribution mechanics and other factors. This is true even if a family lives near a bison herd.

ITBC implemented a preventative health care initiative that educates Native American families on the benefits of range fed buffalo meat in their daily diet. In conjunction with developing methods to make buffalo meat accessible to them as an economic development effort for member Tribes and more importantly as a healthy food to reintroduce into the diets of Native American populations to fight diet related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.

Bison is an excellent red meat that is low in fat, high in protein, and rich in flavor. It is easily raised without need for grain supplement, antibiotics or hormone additives. Its calorie value is low, and it is considered a nutrient dense food with high concentrations of iron and essential fatty acids.
