How does a Tribe become a member of ITBC?
InterTribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) appreciates your Tribe's interest in becoming a member. In becoming a member, we would hope to be able to assist your Tribe in reestablishing or expanding a bison herd on your lands. ITBC incorporated as a non-profit 501(c) (3) Tribal organization in 1992 and is currently made up of 57 Tribes spanning 19 states. ITBC is committed to restoring bison to Tribal lands in a manner that promotes cultural enhancement, spiritual revitalization, ecological restoration and economic development, while remaining compatible with each member tribes’ traditional beliefs and practices. ITBC is governed by a Board of Directors, which is comprised of one tribally designated representative from each member tribe. The role of ITBC, as established by its membership, is to act as a facilitator in coordinating education and training programs, developing marketing strategies, coordinating the transfer of surplus buffalo from national parks to tribal lands, and providing technical assistance to its membership. ITBC provides management, technical and procurement assistance to tribes, wildlife and biological services to bison projects, marketing assistance, community development through skill and labor training assistance, mentoring opportunities, and wildlife stewardship to assist tribes with restoration efforts.
